Mier "Why can't she remember that"
All children have their own language in culturally specific ways. One of the first main things that made me think was on the first page when the study was done that showed how african american children told more stories than european students. I thought that was surprising because from elementary school I always noticed that the african american students would alway be shy and did not like to talk as much as the rest so that was a surprise for me. Also, I also thought it was a good thing that the little girl Lindsey always has books read to her because when you read to a child it helps them with vocabulary and also helps them absorb cultural lessons about gender roles, family relationships, and friendship. However for children like Marisa and Lem, reading books in not part of their culture so they learn their cultrual lessons through interactions with others. As we can see children learn their cultrual lessons in many different ways. All cultures are different and that is why they learn in different ways. I agree with the section that says choose a book that relates to the children's lives. If a teacher did this many children would better understand what the book was about so then they could relate to it better than if it were a book that did not relate to them at all. Also, making books come alive can better help the students understand what the books are about. When the students see puppets acting out the book or pictures it can help them remember what the book is about. When the students see things coming alive and moving it will also help them to concentrate more so that they can retain more information. Finally using all the techniques such as making the book come alive and relating it to the child's life can really help the students remember the book. I know that when I use to read to my little cousin I used to add excitement to the book and would use pictures and stuff animals to help tell the stories. This would help him remember the story better and always help him comprehend what was really going on. Children who can see have pictures to look at or stuff animals for acting out parts will better understand what the story is really about and also be able to understand the main idea of it.

Just like you agreed with me I also agree with everything you have said above. I was also surprised that they said that European students don't tell stories. I am of Portuguese descent and have always been a big story teller. I love to tell stories about what has happened to me and also my own made up stories. I am a story teller that uses her hands to depict what she is saying. There is my cultural influence. My family consists of big story tellers and thus I am also one too.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that children are able to focus more and learn more when a story is told visually. It is easy for the child to understand the story when there is visuals because they aren't only hearing but seeing too.
I agree with several points that you stated:books should come alive when being read, and that a student should be able to relate to the story being told. I remember as a child there was nothing worse than reading a boring book because most of the time you would stop after the first few pages. If the student was interested and could relate it would make reading much easier. Also, I am a visual learner so if a teacher made a book come alive it helped me understand it beter. One way to do this is use puppets for example.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with you. I believe that students should feel a connections to stories. Because in today's society where there is so many different ethnic backgrounds its important to learn about yours as well as other's culture. This will not only be beneficial to the children to connect with the story but children will be more accepting to other, allowing them to have an open mind.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you. I think that students can identify with stories whether it be through where the stories take place or just certain things in them and I think when that connection happens, the children becomes more engaged. I am definitely a story teller, I could write for days and I'm Irish and Scottish. Who knows if that has anything to do with it LOL.
