Race, Class, and Gender Why students fail

Specifically blacks and similar minorities believe that in order for a minority person to succeed in school academically, he or she must learn to think and act white."

I agree with this statement because in some parts of our country in order for them to fit in they have to change their entire lifestyle to a white person's. Especially for example a spanish person they must learn to speak english and when they do this it pushes them further away from their culture and more into a white person's culture. I feel that people that are black or latino etc do feel the need to think they have to act white so that they will fit in.

"each group needs to be understood separately within its own cultural, class, race, and gendered frames of reference."

i think that this statement is so true because different groups are so different from one another. For example spanish people are so different than black. They have different things that they do in their culture so therefore they should be looked as two separate groups not as one.

"Disadvantaged females not only constitute an exonomically subordinate group; they are also opressed by the very fact that they are females."

I agree with this statement. Many females are opressed because they are females. I learned last semester in my woment studies class that women are paid much lower than men and also recieve less pretigious jobs. When i leared this i did not agree with it at all because women can so things just as good as men do. I do not think they should be discriminated against because they are females.

"Marriage appeared as a trap from which they saw few avenues of escape"

I really liked this statement because some women really feel like it is a trap. Many women are scared to escape their marriage. Those women are usually the ones being abused. They are afraid that if they try to escape things will get worse. I also learned last semester in women studies class that when a women is being abused she usually will not do much about it because she is scared that if she did she would get more hurt.

  1. I like what you said about how those who are not white need to change themselves in order to fit into a school community. I agree that although we try to ignore that there is this strong impact it is still there. Students, mainly those who are a minority in their school, need to change themselves in order to become a part of their school. Education is making them conform to what they believe is the ideal student. I do think that in some ways this does not only happen to students that are not white but it, at times; can have an impact on white students. There is rarely a student who can fit the mold of an ideal student.

  2. I agree with most of what you said here. I think being a female sometimes it is harder to be taken seriously in some aspects. Like, for example, in sports I can be seen as less able to do things because I am not a male. I was joking with one of my guy friends one time about playing him in basketball and he said he would beat me because of the sole reason that I was a woman. This angered me because I can remember dating back to elementary school when I would want to play basketball at recess with the boys and my best friend and I would always be picked last because we were girls. (Little did those boys know that both my best friend and I would grow up to play college basketball.. so I got the last laugh on this one!)

  3. I liked what you said about females being at a disadvantage. There is no reason why men should be getting paid more than women. Income should be based on the skill of the INDIVIDUAL. If today's society began looking as being as individual instead of looking at them as being associated with a group, racism would not exist.

  4. Conformity is everywhere and especially happens in schooling. There are always clicks in school and everyone is constantly worrying about what everyone else thinks. I also agree that female are at a disadvantage and this is not fair. Do not judge a book by its cover is exactly how the world should be.
