A particularly cheap white whine

This article really open my eyes to how many more white students get scholarships than black. Also, it really shows how whites have many more opportunites than blacks do.

"white students are twice as likely as their african american or latino counterparts to be taught by the most highlty qualified teachers and half as likely to have least qualified instuctors in class."

I thought this was very interesting to read because it is not right that they stick the less qualified teachers with the students who are no white. The students who are not white deserve to get the same education as the students who are white. It is not right how our society descriminates these students just by their color. In my eyes everyone deserves to get educated by highly qualified teachers no matter what their color or race is.

"whites would enjoy extra and unearned opportunity relative to people of color, thanks to pre-existing advantages to which we were never entitled in the first place."

This statement is completely true. Every white person was born with these special advantages that were never earned. Just because we were born white we are fortuneate to not be the race that is discriminated against. Unfortunately for a black person or a Latino person they were not born into the preferred race to therefore they face these hardships such as being educated by a less qualified teacher, not getting the opportunity to be placed in advanced placement college, and not getting the opportunity to recieve a full scholarship to college.

"On average black student's families are only able to cover about forty-two percent of the cost of college at the nation's most selective schools, while white families are able to cover, on average, roughly seventy- four percent of the total cost."

This was really an eye opener to me to see how much black families struggle compared to white families. White families are able to afford the college tuition because they are the ones for the most part that hold the prestigious high paying jobs. While on the other hand black families are not fortunate to have the high paying jobs so therefore they have to struggle to put their children through college. We have made college so expensive so therefore only the people who have money will be able to go.

  1. Yes, this article brought forth all these facts that are right before our eyes that we don’t see or choose to ignore. A society should not discriminate its people. Most importantly, education which can be considered to be a safe place for students should not discriminate between people. I would think that education would be the most accepting and most open. Whites get so many advantages and they come as second nature. We don’t question these advantages and we just expect them to be there. While others need to struggle for things that whites are able to achieve and receive in the blink of an eye.

  2. I also thought your quote one was shocking. I knew that Whites were more likely but I wasn't aware by how much. And you're right this is not right. There is no reason why race has to play a factor. Race does not create personally. Every race has there good and bad, therefore theres no need for such a disadvantage for non-white people.

  3. The facts are so ridiculous when you look at them. You can get a scholarship for almost anything nowadays and that is disturbing. I feel like if I put down that I had a Native American ancestor (which I do but never put on college applications because I thought it was ridiculous to even try and get money for it) I would have been able to receive all sorts of money for college. I read somewhere that you can get money for being short, tall, or good at sports. I think that it is disgusting for BU to take away race based scholarships while other random scholarships are being tossed out all over the country.

  4. This article was very eye opening and I did not know how many advantages white people had. I also think that by trying to give minorities scholarships it is contradicting itself because we are still categorizing based on race. Instead of giving scholarships based on academics they are being given for race and other ridiculous reasons. I feel as though scholarships should be rewarded with no racism or anything it should be as if the person's identity is unknown. Applications should not say what race a person is this way you cant judge a book or give them based on race.
