“Fundamental to constructivist teaching is a respect for each student as both an active agent in the learning process and an essential member of the learning community.”
This quote is basically saying that the teacher needs to recognize each students importance to the class. Each student brings a different piece to the class. The teacher should allow the students to do things that express themselves. Also, part of being a teacher is respecting the students so they will respect you back. Every student in the class brings something new which makes every class unique.
I really liked the part in the article when shayne Robbins was saying how the class would not be half the way it is without the children with down syndrome in it. She then goes on to say "we are all in it together". Going back to the first quote each child brings something different to the class. Each child may learn different or may look different from the rest but they still do bring something to it. What shayne robbins was basically saying was the class would be incomplete if you took those three children out of it.
Community] requires a willingness to see people as they are-different perhaps in their minds and in their bodies, but not different in their spirits or in their willingness and ability to contribute to the mosaic of society.”
this was by far my favorite quote from this article. This is how a community should be. It should be one in which people can go to talk about any problems they have. A community has to be filled with people who you know you can count on in hard times. Also, within the community you need to be able to understand the different people and they need to understand you. I think it is great when schools have their own little communites such as the after school clubs, or sports. When you have a group of people you know you can count on it gives you a sense of belonging and everyone deserves to feel that.
I like how this article connected the idea of community into the relationships within a classroom. Children should form a community within their classroom. Each child should be able to voice their own thoughts and ideas. Everyone will then be spirited and unafraid of voices what they are thinking. There will be a comfortable atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteI like when you said, "each child brings something different to the class. Each child may learn different or may look different from the rest but they still do bring something to it." I think that is exactly right. Working at the daycare, I have gotten to see all different types of children; ones who act up, ones with rough pasts, ones who are spoiled. I think that they each react differently in class but together they do great things. I have seen in a class when one child is acting up and another child will take it upon themselves to tell that child to calm down, it's time for school.
ReplyDeleteI agreed with your ideas about the last quote you used. Being a community in the classroom is essential and beneficial. With having a community it creates comfort. This allows students to ask question frequently, engage in classroom discussions and be able to interact with one another. This are all important aspect within a classroom for great education.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the last quote and with Bethany that being a community in a classroom is essential and beneficial. I feel like you learn more when you get to know the people around you and also it makes you feel connected to everyone. I know I hate when I do not know people and learning in an environment like that is tough. When someone feels comfortable I feel like learning is easier. I enjoy this class and hearing everyones opinions because it makes me think of my own opinion and helps me to respect everyone.
